Is It Safe To Give A Pregnancy Foot Massage?
The short answer is ‘Yes!’… the longer answer as to whether pregnancy foot massage is safe is that it depends what you’re doing. Reflexology, given by a specially trained reflexologist is safe as they will avoid areas that the treatment needs to avoid (reproductive organs and pituitary gland if massaging before 38 weeks). The technique of Reflexology is a very specific bone to bone pressure (creating something called the Piezoelectric Effect). If you’re doing a home pregnancy foot massage you’re not going to be creating this effect. Acupressure and Thai pregnancy foot massage are treatments similar to reflexology but work on the meridian lines and require pressure on specific spots to work. Ensure that the therapist is qualified to a high enough standard in pregnancy foot massage to know about the correct points to avoid in pregnancy. Acupressure and acupuncture require very specific points to be pressed to stimulate the meridian. A general foot massage won’t have any effect on these points as you’ll be using the pads of the fingers and thumbs.
Pregnancy foot massage is safe if you avoid rubbing up the inside of the leg (you wouldn’t want to dislodge a little blood clot that was happily (safely) sitting there). Make sure that you are sitting comfortably and giving baby maximum space to move into a good position (check out our video about Optimum Foetal Positioning).
